Not a Playground for Squeezing and Squashing: Respect Our House Rules

Welcome to Your Kitten Journey!

Congratulations on starting the journey to find the perfect kitten for your home! We are all very excited for you. Please take a moment to read the following house rules to prepare yourself for your visit to our cattery. Each visit to view our kittens is a valuable time for them to be socialised, and we take it very seriously. Help us by providing positive experiences for our kittens and ensuring they have wonderful interactions with humans.

(Click on each rule to see a dropdown with a detailed explanation and rationale behind it)

Preparing for Your Visit

  • Rationale: We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a bit of fur on, and that can withstand the occasional scratch or chew. Avoid clothing with loose strings or decorative items that cats might play with or chew on. For the best experience, please wear attire that is easy to sit on the floor to interact with our cats.

  • Rationale: This ensures cleanliness and helps maintain a hygienic environment for our cats and other visitors. If you forget to bring socks, you can purchase a pair from us for $4.

  • Rationale: Cats are particularly sensitive to odours, possessing a sense of smell far superior to that of humans. Strong perfumes, colognes, or even body odour from sweat can make them wary and suspicious. This minimises any distress to the cats and encourages them to come closer without hesitation.

During Your Visit

  • Rationale: Upon entering the Kitten Room, visitors must spread out, ignore the cats, and find a place to sit quietly for the first 5 minutes. Do not approach or try to engage with the kittens immediately. Even if a kiten comes up to sniff you, refrain from petting them. This allows the kittens to come to you at their own pace and comfort level, helping them understand that new visitors are not a threat. Over time, this will train our kittens to remain relaxed and happy when new groups enter.

  • Rationale: Engage with our kittens through passive interaction by allowing them to approach you first. Sit or stand calmly, signaling that you are not a threat. This helps them feel in control and more comfortable, creating a calm and inviting atmosphere. Avoid loud conversations, sudden gestures, and fast hand movements, which can train kittens to see hands as toys, leading to bad habits of chasing or swatting at hands. Use your hands for slow, gentle pets and teaser toys for playtime. This approach reduces pressure on the kittens, making them more likely to initiate contact on their own terms.

  • Rationale: Kittens need to feel safe and secure to sleep comfortably. Disturbing a sleeping kitten can cause stress and make them feel unsafe. We want our kittens to feel at ease and be able to sleep whenever and wherever they choose, without the need to hide. Respecting their need for rest helps create a peaceful environment where kittens feel safe sleeping in the open.

  • Rationale: Approaching a kitten head-on and us humans being very tall can be towering and confrontational for them, causing them to move away. Instead, approach them slowly from the side, squat down, or try to appear smaller in stature to be less intimidating. Then, slowly extend your hand to pet them gently on their back. Do not have your hand over their head, as this can be particularly intimidating for kittens. We do not allow visitors to pet the heads of our kittens. However, if your hands come from under them and give them gentle cheek rubs, that’s more than welcome. This approach helps our kittens remain relaxed and encourages positive interactions.

  • Rationale: To ensure our kittens remain comfortable and happy, please limit each instance of petting a particular kitten to 3 to 5 gentle strokes. Continuously petting the same kitten can build up pent-up energy in them, which they may find annoying. This can cause them to move away, nibble on your hand, or even paw you as a warning to stop. Instead, after a few strokes, take a break or move on to the next kitten. This approach shows our kittens that you respect their personal space and are not going to overdo it. In turn, this can make them yearn for more attention and come to you asking for more pets. Remember, less is more.

  • Rationale: To carry a kitten requires a lot of bonding and trust. We want our kittens to be happy and not worried about being picked up by strangers. To see whether a particular kitten is comfortable being carried, please ask our staff to carry the kitten for you. This ensures that the kitten remains comfortable and stress-free while you observe its response to being handled. Your cooperation helps us maintain a happy and secure environment for our kittens.

  • Rationale: Pulling or grabbing any part of a kitten's body, such as their tail, ears, or legs, can cause significant stress, discomfort, and potential injury. To ensure the safety and well-being of our kittens, please refrain from pulling or grabbing any of their body parts. Gentle and respectful interactions help keep our kittens happy and healthy.

  • Rationale: The belly is the most vulnerable spot for kittens, and they typically only allow people they trust, like their owners, to pet them there. Touching or petting a kitten's belly can cause stress and discomfort. To ensure our kittens feel safe and comfortable, please avoid touching or petting their bellies.

  • Rationale: Bringing your face close to a Kitten's face, staring at them, or kissing them is uncomfortable for cats and can be seen as a confrontation. Kittens do not like direct eye contact, as it is a form of intimidation. Instead, maintain a respectful distance, blink your eyes slowly, and even fake a yawn to signal that you mean no harm. This helps ensure our kittens feel safe, maintaining a calm and stress-free environment for our feline friends.

  • Rationale: Running around or stomping your feet can be very unsettling for our kittens, making them feel threatened and anxious. To maintain a calm and peaceful environment, please avoid running and stomping your feet while in the Kitten Room. Gentle movements help keep our kittens relaxed and comfortable.

  • Rationale: If a kitten retreats away from you or backs up into a corner, it is a sign that they need space and feel threatened. Do not corner them or chase after them. Additionally, if you are in a group, avoid everyone crowding around the same kitten, as this can make the kitten feel trapped. Allowing cats to retreat and giving them space helps them feel safe and respected. This ensures a more comfortable and stress-free environment for our feline friends.

  • Rationale: To ensure a positive and enjoyable experience for our kittens, please use the provided cat teasers and toys appropriately. Avoid hitting the teaser on the ground repeatedly, as the noise can be disturbing. Instead, gently wave the teaser to engage the kittens, but not right in front of their faces, as this can be annoying for them. Additionally, do not poke the kittens with the teaser. Please refrain from bringing your own cat toys or lasers into the cattery, and do not throw any toys at the kittens to get their attention. Using the cat teasers gently and respectfully helps keep our kittens happy and stress-free.
